Softball Falls in Snowy Home Opener Against Southern Illinois

The Flames scatter four hits across six innings before the game was called.

CHICAGO (March 22, 2024) – The UIC softball team's (8-21, 1-3 MVC) return to Flames Field ended prematurely as the Flames dropped the first game of the home opening weekend series Friday afternoon to Southern Illinois (21-4, 6-0 MVC), 4-0.

The game was called off after six innings of play due to the winter weather conditions.

Senior Emma Crowley (Peoria, Ill./Peoria Notre Dame) went 1-for-3 in the game with a double. Senior Larisa Villa (La Habra, Calif./La Habra) alongside the freshmen pair of Siena Stickney (Mission Viejo, Calif./Capo Valley) and Cameran Rios (Effingham, Ill./St. Anthony) all collected singles in the game. Graduate student Christina Toniolo (Crystal Lake, Ill./Crystal Lake South) struck out three in four innings of work in her relief appearance.

GAME RECAP
  • After the Salukis took an early 4-0 lead, the Flames first hit came off the bat of Rios with two outs in the bottom of the second, before she was stranded on base.
  • Toniolo entered the circle in the third inning, starting the frame with tback-to-back Saluki swinging strikeouts. That was followed by a groundout to Stickney to give UIC it's first 1-2-3 inning of the game.
  • Stickney opened the bottom of the third with a base hit out to the right field grass for a single. She was moved into scoring position in the next at-bat behind a sacrifice bunt from junior Jojo Santiago (Channahon, Ill./Joliet Catholic Academy) before being stranded.
  • Following another 1-2-3 inning by the Flames in the top of the fourth, Villa hit a shallow fly ball to right field for a two-out single, moving up to second base on the SIU defensive miscue before a fly out from Rios ended the frame.
  • After a quiet fifth inning for both teams, Toniolo collected her third and final strikeout for the first out of the sixth inning. After a second single of the inning led to runners on second and first for the Salukis, back-to-back pop outs to Stickney ended the momentum for Southern Illinois.
  • UIC saw some late-inning momentum with a two-out double to center field from Crowley in the bottom of the sixth, before Southern Illinois secured the win with a ground-out to first base from Villa and the game was called.

  • After a three strikeout performance, Toniolo leads all UIC pitchers with 46 strikeouts in the season.
