NASHVILLE (March 9, 2024) – The UIC softball team (7-15) opened the Music City Classic with a doubleheader split at Lipscomb Saturday afternoon, winning game one, 5-3 before falling in the nightcap, 6-2 on Draper Diamond at Smith Stadium in Nashville.
Graduate student
Carlee Jo Clark (Carol Stream, Ill./Southern Illinois) batted .429 in the twinbill with a double, triple, home run and three RBI. Senior
Emma Crowley (Peoria, Ill./Peoria Notre Dame) also collected her second multi-hit game of the season, going 2-for-3 with an RBI in the first-game win.
COMMENT FROM HEAD COACH LYNN CURYLO
"I'm happy with how
Alyssa McIntosh came into game one and shut their offense down.
Emma Crowley came up big for us offensively. In the second game, we never truly figured Laine Barefoot. We will come back stronger tomorrow."
GAME ONE (5-3, UIC)
- After senior Anna Walker (Burnside, Ill./Warsaw) walked and stole second base to get into scoring position, she scored on Clark's RBI double off in the top of the first.
- After the Bison tied it up in the bottom of the first, the Flames responded with two runs in the second on RBI from senior Crowley and junior Grace Fleming (Long Beach, Calif./Millikan) before the Bison tied it up 3-3 in the bottom of the inning.
- Clark opened the third by crushing a 1-0 pitch to right field for a triple. She later scored on a sacrifice fly from senior Larisa Villa (La Habra, Calif./La Habra) to give the Flames a one-run lead.
- Redshirt junior Alyssa McIntosh (Lancaster, Calif./Lancaster) entered the circle in the bottom of the third after senior Miranda Gomez's (Pico Riviera, Calif./Bishop Amat) two inning of work and kept Lipscomb at bay. In five scoreless innings of work, she allowed five hits with one strikeout and one walk.
- After Crowley singled and scored a key insurance run in the seventh on a Lipscomb error, the Flames made it stand up with strong defensive play and a swinging strikeout to secure the win.
GAME TWO (6-2, LIP)
- Clark wasted little time in getting UIC on the board in game two, crushed a full-count pitch over the wall in right-center field for her third home run of the season, bringing Fleming across with her to give the Flames an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first.
- After the Bison scored six in the bottom of the inning, the Flames attempted to answer on several occasions.
- Freshman Siena Stickney (Mission Viejo, Calif./Capo Valley) drew a two-out walk in the second and added a one-out single to right in the fifth but was left stranded both times.
- Junior Hailey Cowing (Torrance, Calif./West Torrance) tried to spark the Flames with a leadoff single to right in the seventh. However, Lipscomb came up with a double play and a ground out to win the game.
- After a rocky first inning, Clark locked down Lipscomb with two innings of one-hit ball. Graduate student Christina Toniolo (Crystal Lake, Ill./Crystal Lake South) finished the game in the circle for the Flames, giving up just two hits and two walks in three innings.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
- With three home runs this season, Clark is tied for fourth in the Missouri Valley Conference in that category.
- Cowing has collected a hit in each of her last three games, batting a team-high .300 this season.
