Softball Rallies Past Indiana State, 6-3 To Earn Fourth Straight MVC Series Win

Flames score six unanswered runs to claim rubber match of weekend series with Sycamores

CHICAGO (April 14, 2024) – The UIC softball team (16-26, 9-8 MVC) erased an early three-run deficit with a six-run outburst to defeat Indiana State (16-22, 5-9 MVC), 6-3 on Sunday afternoon at Flames Field. UIC has now won eight of its last 11 games and secures its fourth consecutive Missouri Valley Conference series.

Redshirt junior Alyssa McIntosh (Lancaster, Calif./Lancaster) won her second consecutive game in the circle, pitching 6.1 innings while scattering three hits, and striking out three in a relief appearance. Junior Hailey Cowing (Torrance, Calif./West Torrance) went 2-for-3 with a double and a pair of two RBI, while freshman Cameran Rios (Effingham, Ill./St. Anthony) also was 2-for-3 with an RBI single and classmate Jazmyn Casas (Berwyn, Ill./Taft) delivered a two-run single.

COMMENT FROM REDSHIRT JUNIOR ALYSSA MCINTOSH
"Today was an awesome team win overall. It was our fourth consecutive series win, which is huge. Everybody did their job. Hailey Cowing coming into the lead-off spot and going 2-for-3, which was huge. Of course, Jazmyn Casas, Cameran Rios and everybody else came through and did their job. I got to work with Emma Crowley behind the plate, and that was just an amazing way to do it."

COMMENT FROM FRESHMAN CAMERAN RIOS
"Overall, we did a really great job. Alyssa McIntosh killed it in the circle and was keeping their hitters on their toes. Offensively, we had Hailey Cowing coming in hot, starting us off with a walk and she had multiple hits in the game. Overall, the defense, the hitting, and the pitching all came together, and we worked great together as a team."

GAME RECAP
  • Indiana State jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first inning, scoring a pair of runs in the initial tally.
  • The UIC defense sharpened and in the third, junior Grace Fleming (Long Beach, Calif./Millikan) came up with a diving catch in right-center field to keep the Flames in contention.
  • In the bottom of the frame, UIC gained its first hit when Cowing legged out a bunt. She would later score on an RBI single off the bat of senior Larisa Villa (La Habra, Calif./La Habra).
  • The Flames tied things up when Casas connected on a 1-2 pitch to center, with her sinking liner just out of reach of the Sycamores' Morgan Goodrich and scoring Rios and Villa.
  • McIntosh kept ISU quiet in the fourth, thanks in part to a double play from her defense.
  • Fleming opened the bottom of the inning with a single. After a sacrifice bunt and a stolen base, she scored on a bloop single from Rios to give UIC a 4-3 lead.
  • In the top of the fifth, the Sycamores had a base runner on first with one out when Indiana State's Kennedy Shade hit a line shot to third. Rios dove to her left to make the catch and quickly threw to first for an inning-ending double play.
  • Cowing added two insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth when she crushed a ball to left-center for a double, scoring Fleming and senior Anna Walker (Burnside, Ill./Warsaw).
  • McIntosh completed her tremendous relief outing in the seventh by setting the Sycamores down in order on three groundouts.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
  • UIC is 8-3 in its last 11 games with consecutive MVC series wins against Evansville, Illinois State, Valparaiso, and Indiana State.
  • McIntosh finished the week with a 0.68 ERA, having pitched 13.1 innings in the past two games and allowing just a single run with six strikeouts.
  • The Flames tallied 19 RBI in the past five games, with Cowing and Casas leading the way with a team-high four RBI each.
  • With its Missouri Valley Conference season just over halfway complete, UIC currently stands sixth in the Valley at 9-8.
