CHICAGO (April 26, 2024) – The UIC softball team (16-31, 9-12 MVC) fell in the opening game of its Missouri Valley Conference series against Drake (20-21, 8-11 MVC), 8-1 on Friday afternoon at Flames Field.
Senior
Emma Crowley (Peoria, Ill./Peoria Notre Dame), redshirt freshman
Jazmyn Casas (Berwyn, Ill./Taft) and freshman
Cameran Rios (Effingham, Ill./St. Anthony) all collected base hits in the game. Graduate student
Carlee Jo Clark (Carol Stream, Ill./St. Francis/Southern Illinois) made her fourth consecutive pitching appearance, going 5.1 innings and scattering seven hits.
GAME RECAP
- After the Bulldogs scored four runs to open the game, Rios beat out an infield single in the bottom of the first inning, but she was erased after being caught leaving early from first base.
- Crowley lined a 1-0 pitch up the middle for a leadoff single in the third, but UIC could not bring her around.
- The Flames' defense came up with a timely double play in the sixth. With a runner on third and no outs, Drake's Carey Koenig hit a ground ball to Rios at third, who then fired across to senior first baseman Larisa Villa (La Habra, Calif./La Habra) for the routine out. Drake's MaKayla Rice tried to score from third, but Villa alertly whipped a throw home to Crowley in time to complete the double play.
- Down to their final out, the Flames scored their lone run in the bottom of the seventh when Casas scored on a passed ball before the Bulldogs secured the victory.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
- Casas has collected a hit in eight of the past nine games. The UIC shortstop is batting .385 since moving into the starting lineup on April 10 at Valparaiso.
- Clark has pitched 17 innings in the past four games, striking out nine.
