CHICAGO (April 28, 2024) – The UIC softball team (17-32, 10-12 MVC) couldn't come back from a four-run first inning by visiting Drake (21-23, 9-12), falling to the Bulldogs, 5-2 on Sunday afternoon in Missouri Valley Conference action at Flames Field.
Among the seven UIC honorees at Sunday's Senior Day pre-game ceremony, graduate student
Carlee Jo Clark (Carol Stream, Ill./St. Francis/Southern Illinois) went 2-for-4 at the plate with an RBI, while senior
Anna Walker (Burnside, Ill./Warsaw) drove in the other Flames' run and senior
Larisa Villa (La Habra, Calif./La Habra) doubled and scored.
In a relief appearance, graduate student
Christina Toniolo (Crystal Lake, Ill./Crystal Lake South) threw 4.2 innings in the circle, allowing just four hits and a single run scored. Redshirt junior
Alyssa McIntosh (Lancaster, Calif./Lancaster) finished in the circle for the Flames, giving up only one hit in 1.2 innings pitched.
GAME RECAP
- After Drake's four-run top of the first, the Flames would cut into the lead in the bottom of the frame, starting with an RBI single off the bat from Clark that scored Villa from third.
- Clark would later score in the inning when Walker would beat out an infield grounder on a Drake defensive miscue to cut the Bulldogs' lead in half, 4-2.
- Toniolo tallied two strikeouts in the top of the third, getting Drake's Abby Martin looking to finish the inning.
- Drake's Makayla Rice opened the top of the fifth with a single, but on the very next pitch she was erased as part of a Flames double play to highlight UIC's fourth consecutive shutout inning on defense.
- Clark connected on a two-out single up the middle in the bottom of the fifth, but was left stranded at inning's end.
- The Bulldogs added an insurance run in the top of the sixth and secured the win after holding the Flames to one hit over the final two innings.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
- With Sunday's double, Villa has a team-leading eight on the season.
- Redshirt freshman Jazmyn Casas (Berwyn, Ill./Taft) went 1-for-3 and has now collected a hit in 10 of the past 11 games.
- In back-to-back relief appearances over the weekend, McIntosh allowed just one hit and two walks in 2.1 innings pitched.
