ST. LOUIS (April 3, 2024) – The Missouri Valley Conference named UIC senior
Agnes Gustafsson (Paris, France/Akademi Båstad Gymnasium) and junior
Mayu Ushio (Yamaguchi, Japan/Miami University) its Doubles Team of the Week Wednesday afternoon.
Ushio and Gustafsson went 2-0 for the Flames at the No. 1 singles position this past week, with victories against Bradley and Illinois State. The duo helped UIC to doubles points victories against the Braves and Redbirds.
"I'm very happy and honored to be named alongside Agnes as the Missouri Valley Conference Doubles Team of the Week," Ushio said. "This is my first time receiving this honor from the MVC and I would like to share this award with my teammates, who always support me. I'm excited to play our next match at home and look forward to seeing the support from our Flames family."
Ushio and Gustafsson are on a three-match win streak and are undefeated in MVC play at No. 1 doubles this spring. The tandem has played 14 matches at No. 1 doubles this season and have a 8-6 record in 2024.
"I am very excited for Mayu and Agnes to be named the MVC Doubles Team of the Week," said head coach
Elizabeth Lumpkin Robinson. "I have really enjoyed seeing them compete and work together on the court. They have high energy and passion and they always want to give their best for the team."
This is Ushio's first weekly award by the MVC this season and Gustafsson's third. The conference named Gustafsson its Singles Player of the Week on
March 20 and
February 14.
Ushio, Gustafsson and the Flames women's tennis program will be back in action Saturday as the program hosts Northern Iowa in a conference clash. Saturday's match starts at 11 a.m. and will take place at either the XS Tennis Village or Flames Outdoor Tennis Courts. The Flames are on a five-match winning streak against the Panthers, dating back to 2006. UIC leads the all-time series 6-3. Last season UIC defeated UNI 6-1 in Cedar Falls, Iowa. Saturday's match is the first held in Chicago between the two programs since 2016.
