CHICAGO (April 6, 2024) – Dominating from start to finish, the UIC women's tennis program (7-10, 3-1 MVC) swept Northern Iowa (3-12, 0-4 MVC) to win its third Missouri Valley Conference match of the season.
The Flames won the doubles point for the fourth match in a row, while junior
Mayu Ushio (Yamaguchi, Japan/Miami University) and senior
Zara Ryan (Dublin, Ireland/Utah State) won their singles matches via 6-0, 6-0 sweeps.

MATCH RECAP
- The Flames swept the doubles point with a 6-0 victory by UIC's No. 1 pair of Agnes Gustafsson (Paris, France/Akademi Båstad Gymnasium) Ushio and a 6-3 win at No. 2 doubles by Tamara Malazonia (Birmingham, United Kingdom/St. Paul's School for Girls) and Camille Belberka (Saint-Denis-lès-Bourg, France Seward County Community College (Kan.). Northern Iowa forfeited the No. 3 doubles match due to the number of healthy players available.
- In singles competition, Ryan made quick work of her opponent at No. 5 singles to sweep her opponent in straight sets. The senior has won seven of her last nine and four of her last five singles matches.
- Ushio also swept her Panthers opposition at No. 3 singles. The junior has eight singles victories on the season and is tied with Ryan for the team-lead.
- At No. 1 singles, Gustafsson had strong focus and execution as she cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 victory.
- With the Flames already securing the match victory, Malazonia maintained good focus after dropping the first set and fought back to win her match at No. 2 singles in three sets.
- Belberka won her match at No. 4 singles for her seventh singles victory of 2024.
- The Panthers also forfeited at No. 6 singles to give the Flames the 7-0 match sweep.
- Four of the five singles matches Saturday were decided in straight sets.
- The victory is UIC's first 7-0 victory of the season and the team's first since it swept Bradley last April.

UP NEXT
- The Flames are back on the court Sunday as the team takes on Belmont (9-7, 2-1 MVC) in Missouri Valley Conference action.
- Sunday's match against the Bruins will take place at 10 a.m. at either the XS Tennis Village or Flames Outdoor Tennis Courts, depending on weather.
- Both Belmont and UIC have conference wins against Bradley and losses against Illinois State. The team is currently 1-4 in road matches this season.
- Sophomore Mariia Hlahola is 12-3 on the season at the No. 1 singles position and has an 8-2 record across her last ten matches.
