CHICAGO (May 10, 2024) – The UIC baseball team (31-15, 14-8 MVC) welcomed Illinois State (25-22, 13-9 MVC) to Les Miller Field at Curtis Granderson Stadium Friday, as the two sides began a crucial three-game series with huge implications in the Missouri Valley Conference standings. After falling behind early, the Flames battled back as they have all season, but fell just short, dropping the opening game by a final score of 8-7.
COACH'S COMMENTS
GAME SUMMARY
- The Flames got off to an early start in Friday's series opener, as they plated two runs in the bottom of the first inning, highlighted by an RBI double down the left field line from AJ Taylor (Downers Grove, Ill./College of DuPage).
- Illinois State answered back strongly in the top of the second inning, striking for six runs, including two home runs, off Flames starter Dillon Schueler (Rock Falls, Ill./Sauk Valley CC) to take a 6-2 lead.
- UIC began to chip away at the Redbird lead in the bottom of the fourth as James Harris (Chicago, Ill./Gwendolyn Brooks) drove home his 41st run of the season on a double down the right field line.
- After the Redbirds added two to their advantage between the fifth and sixth innings, the Flames pushed a runner across in the home half of the sixth, as Jackson Bessette (Bartlett, Ill./South Elgin) launched his seventh home run of the season narrowing the deficit to 8-4.
- The game got interesting in the bottom of the ninth, as Kendal Ewell (Calumet City, Ill./Kentucky) launched a 488-foot home run to center field, a three run bomb that cut the lead to 8-7. The Flames were unable to push across the tying run, as the game ended on a warning track fly ball from Taylor to left field.
The Flames and Redbirds will continue their three-game series on Saturday, as the two meet for a 2 p.m. CT first pitch. The game can be seen live on ESPN+, and heard free of charge on the Flames Network.
