COACH'S COMMENTS

GAME SUMMARY
  • Following a Redbirds solo home run in the top of the first inning, the Flames answered with a long ball of their own in the bottom of the first, as Kendal Ewell (Calumet City, Ill./Kentucky) launched his 19th of the season, one shy of the UIC single-season record. The two-run home run gave the Flames a 2-1 lead.
  • The Flames tallied another pair of runs in the bottom of the third, as Carson Roberts (Windfield, Ill./College of DuPage) scored on a foul out to third base, and Zane Zielinski (Chicago, Ill./Lake View) scored on a busted bunt play to extend the advantage to 4-1.
  • The Redbirds answered back in the top of the fifth inning, plating a pair of runs off starter Brandon Bak (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield North) before tying the game 4-4 in the sixth on a sacrifice fly.
  • UIC jumped back ahead for good in the bottom of the seventh, as Ewell drove in another run with an RBI double, and the Flames plated two more in the inning to take a 7-4 advantage.
  • Ryan Smith (West Chester, Ill./Nazareth Academy) was stellar out of the bullpen, going two innings and striking out four without allowing a run. Reece Lawler (Gurnee, Ill./Iowa) came on in the ninth and nailed down the save, his 11th of the season, which ranks third in the NCAA this season.
