Softball Drops Series Opener at Bradley

Flames aim to bounce back Saturday in rescheduled 2 p.m. (CT) game

PEORIA, Ill. (May 3, 2024) – The UIC softball team (18-33, 11-14 MVC) came up on the short end of an 8-0 decision in six innings on Friday to open its Missouri Valley Conference series against Bradley (27-25, 14-11 MVC) on the OSF Healthcare Field at the Louisville Slugger Complex in Peoria, Ill.

Graduate student Carlee Jo Clark (Carol Stream, Ill./St. Francis/Southern Illinois) pitched five innings, scattering five hits and tying a season-high with six strikeouts. Senior Larisa Villa (La Habra, Calif./La Habra) went 2-for-3 at the plate with a pair of singles. Redshirt freshman Jazmyn Casas (Berwyn, Ill./Taft) drew walks in both of her plate appearances.

GAME RECAP
  • After the Braves scored a pair in the bottom of the first, Casas drew her first walk to become UIC's first base runner of the game in the top of the second before being left stranded.
  • The Braves added three insurance runs in the bottom of the third before the Flames collected their first hit in the game off the bat of Villa in the top of the fourth, smacking the ball out to left field for a single before being stranded at first.
  • Clark was hit by a pitch in the sixth and moved into scoring position behind Villa's second base hit of the game on a single up the middle. The pair advanced 60 feet on a wild pitch, but were left on base after an inning-ending fly out.
  • Bradley secured the shortened win in the bottom of the sixth after a fielder's choice plated the final run.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
  • Villa has tied Clark for the team lead in hits this season with 43.
  • Casas has reached base in 12 of the past 13 games.
  • Clarks tied her season high in strikeouts for the second consecutive game, having also had six K's on Tuesday in UIC's 2-0 win against Valparaiso in the home season finale at Flames Field.
