PEORIA, Ill. (May 4, 2024) – Graduate student
Christina Toniolo (Crystal Lake, Ill./Crystal Lake South) was locked in the moment she stepped into the circle Saturday afternoon, holding Bradley (27-26, 14-12 MVC) to one run on a two-hit complete game performance, leading UIC (19-33, 12-14 MVC) to a 4-1 victory Saturday afternoon.
Senior
Anna Walker (Burnside, Ill./Warsaw) collected a two-RBI single, while redshirt freshman
Jazmyn Casas (Berwyn, Ill./Taft) scattered two hits and an RBI. Junior
Grace Fleming (Long Beach, Calif./Millikan) had a late-inning RBI single Saturday, finishing the game going 1-for-3 at the plate.
COMMENT FROM GRADUATE STUDENT CHRISTINA TONIOLO
"I'm really proud of how this team came back from yesterday's game. I think we had a lot of energy, a lot of fun and a lot of passion in today's game. I think that is what gave us a lot of success. Coach referenced the song, "The Climb," by Miley Cyrus and so we embodied that. We realized it's about the process, and that is how you get these wins. I am just really proud of everyone."
COMMENT FROM JUNIOR GRACE FLEMING
"Today we had a great team win. The defense, offense and pitching all came together. Yesterday we talked about finding that passion, playing with that passion and punching first. Scoring those three runs before the other team scored was really big. We had big defensive plays from
Cameran Rios at third base, she killed it today.
Christina Toniolo came in clutch in the circle. Everyone came together, worked together and we got it done."
GAME RECAP
- After three innings of scoreless play, the Flames got on the board first in the top of the fourth, when Casas hit a shot to centerfield, scoring freshman Cameran Rios (Effingham, Ill./St. Anthony) from third.
- The Flames added two more runs in the fourth when Walker connected on a pitch, sending it through the right side of the infield, scoring Casas and senior Larisa Villa (La Habra, Calif./La Habra).
- The Braves scored their lone run in the bottom frame off of a UIC defensive miscue, but Toniolo ended the inning on a swinging strikeout to end the momentum.
- Fleming added an insurance run for UIC in the top of the sixth, when she singled up the middle to score Casas.
- Bradley began to rally in the bottom of the seventh with two runners on and no outs. The rally ended quickly when Bradley's Ashley Breeding hit a shot to Rios at third, who tagged her base and threw Breeding out for the double play. The Flames secured the win in the next at-bat, with a groundout to Casas.
