Baseball Hosts Illinois State in Crucial MVC Series

Flames Welcome Redbirds to Chicago, Looking to Maintain Status in Missouri Valley Conference

CHICAGO (May 9, 2024) – The UIC baseball team (31-14, 14-7 MVC) rounds out the home portion of the regular season schedule this weekend, as it welcomes Illinois State (24-22, 12-9 MVC) to Les Miller Field at Curtis Granderson Stadium for a crucial three-game series with massive post-season implications. The Flames enter the weekend in a tie for second place in the Missouri Valley Conference with Evansville, with Illinois State just two games back.
 
FLAMES FACTS
  • The Flames have exceeded expectations in their second season in the Missouri Valley Conference, entering the penultimate weekend of the regular season in a tie for second in The Valley with a conference record of 14-7 and a 31-14 record overall.
  • UIC has shined in the spotlight this year, boasting a 5-2 record against Power 5 Conference opponents, including a 3-1 mark against the Big Ten, the fourth-ranked RPI conference as of May 10.
  • Three Flames have been named to national award mid-season watch lists this season, including C Jackson Bessette (Buster Posey Award), RP Reece Lawler (NCBWA Stopper of the Year), and SS Zane Zielinski (Brooks Wallace Award).
  • Kendal Ewell is on pace to break the single-season UIC home run record (20) with 17 on the year, as well as being in the running for Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Year (.389 BA, 17 HR, 56 RBI).
  • Dillon Scheuler is slated to toe the rubber in the series opener Friday night, and he currently ranks fourth in The Valley with five wins on the year.
