Softball Heads Out to California to Compete in Silicon Valley Classic I Over the Weekend

Flames slated to face Cal Poly, Colorado State, San Jose State, Santa Clara and UC San Diego over the weekend.

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (Feb. 13, 2025) – The UIC softball team (2-3) continues non-conference tournament play this weekend, heading out to California to compete in the Silicon Valley Classic I, co-hosted by San Jose State and Santa Clara over the Valentine's Day Weekend.
 
The Flames' only two games that will be streamed will be against the co-hosts. The first game will be against the Spartans at the Spartans Softball Stadium, Friday at 5 p.m. (CT) via a paid subscription with the Mountain West Network. The next day, the Flames face the Broncos at the Santa Clara Softball Stadium at 5 p.m. (CT) on ESPN+. Live stats for every game will be available at UICFlames.com.

SCOUTING CAL POLY (1-4)
  • This will be the third game between both programs and the first time they face off since Feb. 11, 2022. In their last meeting, the Flames secured a 1-0 shutout over the Mustangs behind a shutout from recent UIC alum Carlee Jo Clark.
  • Cal Poly opened the season hosting its Mustang Classic last weekend, finishing with a 7-6 win over Oregon State for its first win of the season. Senior Julia Barnett leads Cal Poly in the batter's box, batting .533 over five games, with eight hits, a pair of doubles, a home run and four RBI.
 
SCOUTING COLORADO STATE (2-3)
  • This will be the fourth time the Flames and Rams are set to battle it out on the diamond. The Rams hold a 3-0 overall lead in the series, last defeating the Flames at the Easton Classic a season ago, 11-0.
  • The Rams walked out of the New Mexico State Invitational 2-3 last weekend, earning wins against UC Santa Barbara (1-0) and Kansas City (12-4 after five innings). Senior catcher Brooke Bohlender had a strong showing at the plate, batting .615 with eight hits and a pair of triples.
 
SCOUTING SAN JOSE STATE (0-5)
  • Things are all tied up four wins a piece between the Flames and the Spartans, set to face off for the ninth time in program history. The Spartans are in search of their first victory of the season, last competing in the UC Davis/Sacramento State Tournament last weekend.
  • Junior Shay McDowell had a strong showing last weekend, collecting seven hits over the weekend, with a team-leading three RBI.
 
SCOUTING SANTA CLARA (3-2)
  • This will be the ninth time the Flames will be slated to face off against the Broncos, and the first time since Feb. 17, 2022. The overall series is all tied up, 4-4.
  • After dropping the first two games of Hawaii's Paradise Classic, the Broncos won the final three games of the weekend against Southern Indiana (9-0), Saint Louis (6-4) and the Rainbow Warriors (3-0). Junior Hazyl Gray is a dual threat both in the batter's box and the circle. She collected two wins on the island of Oahu, having pitched ten innings, not allowing a run and striking out eight.
 
SCOUTING UC SAN DIEGO
  • This will be the first time the Flames and the Tritons are set to battle it out on the diamond.
  • The Tritons remained close to home, participating in their very own tournament, the La Jolla Invitational. They went 1-3 over the weekend, collecting their sole win against Portland State in a 5-2 victory last Sunday. Junior Lily Hermosillo batted .500 over the weekend, collecting four hits, including two hits in the Tritons win over the Vikings.
LAST WEEKEND TOURNAMENT RECAP
  • The Flames went 2-3 to open the season at the South Alabama Invitational presented by Marriott Mobile last weekend. They gained victories over South Alabama (4-1) , 14-2 in five innings on Friday, and closed out the weekend with a 3-0 shutout over Northwestern State (0-5) Sunday afternoon.
  • Freshman hurler Jasmine Whorley (Alameda, Calif./Alameda) threw the first shutout in the opening weekend for the Flames since 2022 in the win over the Demons. She allowed one hit and struck out a pair of batters in a 101-pitch performance across seven innings. Whorley finished with being credited both wins over the weekend, sporting a 2.47 ERA in 17 innings pitched across three appearances.
  • Freshman Nina Pesare (Lisle, Ill./ Benet Academy) led the Flames in Mobile with five hits over five games, batting .333 after the first weekend of her collegiate career. .
  • Senior Grace Fleming (Long Beach, Calif./ Millikan) collected a team-leading seven RBI in Mobile.
