Softball Splits First Day of Silicon Valley Classic I Friday

Flames defeat UC San Diego behind McIntosh Complete Game Shutout before falling to San Jose State.

SAN JOSE, Calif. (Feb. 14, 2025) – The UIC softball team (3-4) went to battle on the softball diamond in day one of the Silicon Valley Classic I in San Jose, Calif. Friday. The Flames started off strong with a 2-0 victory over UC San Diego (1-4) before falling to hosting San Jose State (1-5) in a 9-2 bout.
 
In game one against the Tritons, the Flames were led in the circle by redshirt senior Alyssa McIntosh (Lancaster, Calif./Lancaster), pitching a three-hit complete game shutout, striking out four and walking a pair of batters. Sophomore Atina'eleila Fonoti's (Mililani, Hawaii/ Mililani) pinch-hitting sacrifice fly in the bottom of the sixth to give the Flames the go ahead run. Graduate student Dee Dee Caskey (Indianapolis, Ind./Bishop Chathard), sophomores Siena Stickeny (Mission Viejo, Calif./Capo Valley) and Cameran Rios (Effingham, Ill./St. Anthony) each collected a hit in the win.

Caskey went one-for-three in the game, getting UIC's first run in the game with an RBI double. Senior Hailey Cowing also collected an RBI single, also batting one-for-three against the Spartans.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
 
  • After finishing out last weekend with freshman Jasmine Whorley's (Alameda, Calif./Alameda) one-hit shutout, the Flames pitched back-to-back shutouts for the first time since back-to-back shoutouts in a double header against IU-Indy on April 17, 2019.
  • With another base runner caught stealing, senior Jo Jo Santiago (Channahon, Ill./ Joliet Catholic Academy) co-leads the Missouri Valley Conference with three runners thrown out in the season.
  • Freshman Nina Pesare (Lisle, Ill. Benet Academy) is tied for sixth in the MVC with six hits in the season, leading the team with a .300 batting average.

On the second of the Silicon Valley Classic I, the Flames head to Santa Clara to face off against Colorado State (3-3) at Noon (CT), followed by facing off against the Broncos (3-2) at 5 p.m. (CT). UIC's game against Santa Clara will be the only game available to stream on ESPN+ with live stats available on UICFlames.com.
