Softball Plays One in First Day of Jeannine McHaney Memorial Classic

Flames first game was postponed due to weather before falling in game two

LUBBOCK, Texas (February 21, 2025) – Day one of the Jeannine McHaney Memorial Classic did not start out as planned for the UIC softball team (4-7) as their first game of the tournament against Detroit Mercy got postponed due to cold weather. By mid-day though, the temperature warmed up enough to get in their game against Indiana University (9-1). After holding a brief lead, the Flames eventually fell to the Hoosiers 7-4.

RECAP

The Flames would take a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning when Grace Fleming (Long Beach, Calif./Millikan) reached home off a Brianna Motto (Corona, Calif./Norco) single up the middle. The lead wouldn't last long though, as the Hoosiers brought three across the plate in the bottom of the inning, taking a 3-1 lead. The Hoosiers built their lead with two additional runs in the third and one in the fifth. In the top of the sixth, pinch hitter Sequoia Sanchez (Corona, Calif./Roosevelt) doubled to center field, scoring Nina Pesare (Lisle, Ill./Benet Academy). In the next at-bat, pinch hitter Trinity Brandhorst (Pacific, Mo./Pacific) singled down the right field line, scoring Atina'eleila Fonoti (Mililani, Hawaii/Mililani), making the score 6-3. After the Hoosiers brought in one run in the sixth, Hailey Cowing (Torrance, Calif./West Torrance) would double to left center field in seventh, scoring Pesare. Unable to bring in anymore runs across the plate, the Flames fell 7-4.

COMMENT FROM INTERIM HEAD COACH JAMIE BUKSA

"Our relievers and pinch hitters came into the game and did what we needed them to do today! The bench gave us the spark we needed!"
