RICHMOND, Kentucky (February 28, 2025) – Opening up action in the EKU Colonel Classic, UIC softball faced back-to-back competition between the University of Akron Zips, and the host, the Eastern Kentucky University Colonels. In their first game, the Flames (4-11) tallied one hit before falling to the Zips (9-6) 9-0. Then, in game two, the Colonels exploded with a home run in both the first and second innings to take the early lead. With just one hit in the sixth inning, the Flames (4-12) were unable to make up ground as they fell to the Colonels (9-5) 7-0.
GAME ONE RECAP
In a game that saw no runs through the first four innings of action, the Zips would find momentum, scoring runs in the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings to defeat the Flames 9-0. Sequoia Sanchez (Corona, Calif./Roosevelt) recorded the Flames hit in the opening game of the EKU Colonel Classic with a double in the second inning.
GAME TWO RECAP
The Flames struggled to get their bats going, while the Colonels began action quickly, homering in both the first and second innings. After two innings, the Colonels led the Flames 7-0 which would ultimately be the winning score. In the bottom of the third inning, Alyssa McIntosh (Lancaster, Calif./Lancaster) had a 3-up, 3-down inning to slow down the Colonels offense. In the top of the sixth, Emma Gumont (Warren, Ohio/Notre Dame College) recorded the Flames first and only hit, ending the Colonels chance at a perfect game.
