Softball Suffers Losses to Dayton and EKU

On day two of the EKU Colonel Classic, the Flames fell to Dayton 9-8 and EKU 9-0

RICHMOND, Kentucky (March 1, 2025) – For day two at the EKU Colonel Classic, the UIC softball team took on the Dayton University Flyers and the host, the Eastern Kentucky University Colonels. In a morning contest, the Flames (4-13) picked up multiple runs, but fell just short to the Flyers (7-4) 9-8. For game two, the Flames (4-14) took on the Colonels (10-5) for the second time this weekend. Similar to their first meeting, the bats were flying in favor of the Colonels, who came out of the second meeting with a 9-0 victory in five innings.

GAME ONE RECAP

Dee Dee Caskey (Indianapolis, Ind./Bishop Chatard) wasted no time getting the game started, opening play with a triple to center field. Caskey later scored from a Hailey Cowing (Torrance, Calif./West Torrance) sac-fly to give the Flames an early 1-0 lead. The Flyers responded quickly though, and by the end of the first inning they took a 3-1 lead over the Flames. In the second, the Flyers added one, leading 4-1. Fourth and fifth inning action saw the Flames add on runs to tie the game. In the fourth, Sequoia Sanchez (Corona, Calif./Roosevelt) homered to left field. Then, with Nina Pesare (Lisle, Ill./Benet Academy) on first, Jojo Santiago (Channahon, Ill./Joliet Catholic Academy) tripled to right field, bringing in Pesare to make it a one run game. In the top of the fifth inning with runners on first and third, Cowing hit an RBI single up the middle, scoring Caskey and tying the game at 4-4. For the first time all weekend, the Flames took the lead in the sixth inning. An RBI double by Santiago scored Larissa Ortiz (Romeoville, Ill./Wisconsin). With runners on first and third, Leila Dixon (Dublin, Calif./Moreau Catholic) stepped up to bat and homered to center field, giving the Flames an 8-4 lead. Unfortunately for the Flames, their lead didn't last long as the Flyers tied the game in the bottom of the sixth inning before walking it off with a single in the seventh inning to steal a 9-8 win over the Flames.

Dee Dee Caskey went 2-for-3 with a double, a triple, and two runs.
