SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (March 14th, 2025) – Back at Thompson Field for game two of the opening weekend of Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) play, the UIC softball team fell to the Missouri State Bears 13-3 in five innings. Similar to game one, the Flames (4-21, 0-2) recorded a run in the top of the first inning, while the Bears (3-19, 2-0) wasted no time to record runs of their own and take the lead. From there, the Bears led the rest of the game to record the conference victory over the Flames.
The Flames opened the scoring in the top of the first when Jojo Santiago (Channahon, Ill. / Joliet Catholic Academy) reached home off a Hailey Cowing (Torrance, Calif. / West Torrance) single to center field. The Bears wouldn't let the Flames hold onto the lead long, though, as they brought in three runners across the plate in the bottom of the first to take an early 3-1 lead. Second-inning action saw the Bears double their lead over the Flames. Emma Gumont (Warren, Ohio / Notre Dame College) got action going for the Flames with a lead-off double to start the third inning. Gumont later scored off a Santiago RBI single. Dee Dee Caskey (Indianapolis, Ind. / Bishop Chatard) reached home before the end of the inning as the Flames trailed 6-3. Just as it seemed the Flames were cutting into the Bears lead, the home team once again came out swinging in the bottom half of the inning as they put up five runs to take an 11-5 lead. In the bottom of the fourth, the Bears tacked on two more runs, securing a final score of 13-3 over the Flames.
