Softball Saturday Doubleheader Goes in Favor of Indiana State

Flames fall in game one 2-0 and game two 3-1

Terre Haute, Ind. – With an adjustment in their schedule due to rain on Friday, the UIC softball team and the Indiana State University Sycamores competed in a Saturday Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) doubleheader on April 26th. The Sycamores (17-30, 11-10 MVC) took the doubleheader victory over the Flames (8-41, 4-18 MVC) as they won game one 2-0 and game two 3-1.

GAME ONE RECAP

In a pitching battle through the first four innings, the Sycamores broke the scoreless battle between the two sides in the bottom of the fifth with the game's only two runs. Through the seven innings of action, the Flames' only two hits came from Siena Stickney in the second off a single down the left field line and from Hailey Cowing in the third with a single to the shortstop. The Sycamores' two runs off a double in the fifth proved enough as they took game one 2-0.

GAME TWO RECAP

In the top of the second inning, the Flames found some momentum and got on the board for an early lead. Siena Stickney started the inning with a lead-off single down the right field line. Stickney then advanced to second as Jojo Santiago was walked. The two then advanced a base on a Grace Fleming ground out, putting both runners in scoring position. With two outs on the board, Nina Pesare stepped up to bat and reached on an error by the pitcher, which allowed Stickney to score, giving the Flames a 1-0 lead. The Flames would hold onto their 1-0 lead until the bottom of the fifth inning when the Sycamores recorded two runs off a triple to center field, taking a 2-1 lead after five innings. The home team added a run in the bottom of the sixth with a single in a bases-loaded situation, taking a 3-1 lead. In the top of the seventh, the Flames would have runners in scoring position but came up short as they fell to the Sycamores 3-1.
