Normal, Ill. – Just over a month after the initial start of their game, the UIC softball team and the Illinois State University Redbirds concluded their series finale in the early evening of April 30th. After Mother Nature affected the original March 29th game, the Flames (8-43, 4-20 MVC) and Redbirds (21-28, 14-10 MVC) were able to close out the remaining two innings of action in a quick resumption of action. The Redbirds recorded the winning run in the bottom of the sixth as they defeated the Flames 5-4.
RECAP
Before Mother Nature played a role in the original game date of March 29th, action was firing up between the Flames and Redbirds. After two scoreless innings, Emma Gumont put the Flames on the board with a two-RBI single in the top of the third inning before the Redbirds made it a one-run game in the bottom half. Then, in the fourth inning, Grace Fleming nailed a two-run home run, giving the Flames a 4-1 lead. The Redbirds answered quickly, though, tying the game at 4-4 in the bottom of the inning before action was suspended in the fifth.
Action resumed on April 30th with Gumont up to bat with one out and Sequoia Sanchez on second in the top of the fifth. Neither side brought in a run in the fifth inning before the Redbirds took the lead in the bottom of the sixth. With a runner on first, the Redbirds hit an RBI double to right center field. The run proved to be the winning run of the game as the Flames were unable to get anything going, falling to the Redbirds 5-4.
