CHICAGO – The Missouri Valley Conference announced its weekly awards Tuesday morning, naming freshman Maryam Hussein as the MVC Defensive Player of the Week for her stellar defensive play in UIC's wins over Evansville (4-14, 1-5 MVC) and Murray State (2-16, 0-6 MVC) over this past weekend.

Hussein opened the week with multiple career highs in Friday night's four-set win over the Purple Aces. Alongside collecting 11 kills, Hussein would hit a career-high seven total blocks, including one solo block in the win. Less than 24 hours later, the freshman would contribute blocking assists in the straight set victory over the Racers.

The middle blocker led the Flames with 10 blocks on the week, averaging 1.67 blocks per set. Hussein leads UIC with 1.22 blocks per set this season across a dozen matches played, ranking fourth on the team with 28.0 total blocks.

The UIC volleyball team (7-11, 3-3 MVC) returns to action Friday, traveling to face Drake (8-10, 3-3 MVC) in Missouri Valley Conference play. First serve is scheduled for 6 p.m. CT. The match will stream on ESPN+, with live stats available at UICFlames.com.
