CHICAGO – The UIC baseball team (4-11-1, 0-0 MVC) scattered 14 hits but only plated five runners, falling to UNC Greensboro (8-11, 0-0 SoCon) 9-5 in the home opener at Curtis Granderson Stadium Friday night.
After the Spartans tacked on a run in the top of the first, the Flames quickly tied it up when a sacrifice fly off the bat from junior
Jake Busson scored senior
Colin Husko. Later in the frame, junior
Thomas Curry hit a single that score senior
Will Smoot to give UIC an early 2-1 lead.
UNC Greensboro responded by scoring six unanswered junior
Alexander Wright crushed a ball just over the right field wall for his first home run of the season in the bottom of the sixth.
Down by six entering the final two innings of the game, Husko collected his lone RBI in the bottom of the eighth, scoring freshman
Sean Cody. On his third and final hit of the night, Cody singled up the middle, scoring the pinch-hitting senior
Ashton Kampa from third. The Flames had runners in scoring position with no outs until three consecutive fielder's choices secured the Spartan's the win.
