Baseball Earns Series Win with Pair of Walk-Offs Saturday

Double-Header Sweep Propels Flames to 2-1 MVC Record

CHICAGO – The UIC baseball team (6-14-1, 2-1 MVC) closed out its three-game series against Valley foe Southern Illinois (9-13, 1-2 MVC) on Saturday, as the two competed in a double-header to avoid the cold weather forecasted for the Chicago area on Sunday.

GAME ONE
The Flames grabbed the early lead in game one, as Alexander Wright went deep in the bottom of the second, a solo shot to put UIC ahead 1-0. SIU answered with a solo shot of their own in the top of the third to tie the game, before Andrew Pyszka's sacrifice fly in the third put the Flames ahead 2-1. The Salukis took a 7-4 lead into the seventh, where the Flames put up four runs to take an 8-7 lead, highlighted by back-to-back homers from Jake Busson and Thomas Curry. The ninth inning was the crux of the action in game one, with SIU scoring two to jump back ahead 9-8 before UIC rallied for two in the bottom half to get the 10-9 walk off victory.

GAME TWO
The bottom of the second in game two was again where the Flames took an early lead, as a Colin Husko double brought home Vidal Colon to put UIC on top 1-0. The Salukis answered with a pair of runs in the top of the third, which the Flames answered three frames later in the bottom of the fourth on an Ashton Kampa sacrifice fly to tie the game at 2-2.
Southern Illinois re-gained the lead in the visiting half of the sixth inning on a bases-loaded double that brought home two Salukis to jump ahead 4-2. The Salukis added one more to take a three-run lead, which was erased in the eighth by Colon's three-run no-doubt home run to tie the game at 5-5. Jake Busson stepped to the plate with the bases empty and two out in the bottom of the ninth, and sent a rocket over the left-center field fence to win the game in walk-off fashion 6-5 for the Flames to earn the series win.
