NASHVILLE, TENN. – The UIC baseball team (7-17-1, 3-3 MVC) closed out its three-game Missouri Valley Conference road series victorious against Belmont (10-18, 2-4 MVC), defeating the Bruins 9-7 at E.S. Rose Park Sunday afternoon.
The Flames were first to get on the board when junior
Vidal Colon scoring on a ground out was soon followed by junior
Lucas Smith scoring on a fielding error. UIC tacked on three more insurance runs four innings later with RBI singles from juniors
Thomas Curry,
Andrew Pyszka and an RBI triple from junior
Alexander Wright.
After the Bruins cut the lead to one in the bottom of the fifth, freshman
Sean Cody crushed the ball over the left-center field wall for his first collegiate home run of his career to keep UIC ahead by two.
The score was knotted up two more times in the later innings, before the Flames scored two go-ahead runs in the top of the ninth when Cody hit a double in the gap, scoring senior
Colin Husko. Cody scored later in the frame when Smith walked with the bases loaded. Graduate student
Zack Millsap secured the win in the bottom of the inning on the mound, earning his fourth save of the season.
