CHICAGO – The UIC baseball team (8-17-1, 3-3 MVC) picked up a midweek win at Curtis Granderson Stadium on Tuesday afternoon, defeating Milwaukee 12-5 behind a 13-hit performance.
After a scoreless top of the first from the Panthers, UIC quickly got its first run on the board when junior
Thomas Curry hit an RBI double, scoring junior
Lucas Smith. The Panthers couldn't respond in the next inning; after starting pitcher
Jared Lessman struck out five of the six batters he faced before the graduate student was pulled after two innings of work.
Curry came back to the batter's box in the top of the third and crushed a 0-2 pitch 103 MPH off the bat for his second home run of the season. In the following inning, UIC tacked on four more runs behind a pair of two-run home runs off the bats of juniors
Jake Busson and
Ashton Kampa in the fourth.
The Panthers wouldn't go down without a fight, plating five runs in the top of the fifth to cut UIC's lead to one run. Senior
Colin Husko added UIC a second insurance run in the bottom of the sixth, scoring on a ground out off the bat of Curry to give the Flames a 7-5 lead entering the later innings.
