CHICAGO – On a cold Friday night, the UIC baseball team (10-20-1, 5-5 MVC) defeated Murray State (21-8, 7-3 MVC) behind the work of strong pitching at Curtis Granderson Stadium to open the weekend of Missouri Valley Conference play.
After the Racers scored in the top of the first, UIC quickly responded when junior
Alexander Wright hit a ground ball to Murray State's Nic Schutte, who bobbled the ball, allowing junior
Lucas Smith to score on the error early in the bottom of the second.
Later in the inning, Schutte committed a balk, allowing junior
Vidal Colon to score from third to give the Flames the lead.
Junior
Jake Busson added another insurance of the bottom of the fifth to give UIC a 3-1 lead when he scored Wright on a fielder's choice.
Junior
Mason Lei settled in after the first inning and began to deal against the Racers, allowing just two more hits in the rest of his outing. He closed out his night with seven innings of work, striking out five, allowing four hits and walking a pair before leaving ahead of the seventh inning stretch.
Graduate student
Mark Eddie enter in relief in the eighth inning, not allowing a single hit and striking out one. Graduate student
Zack Millsap entered the ninth inning, closing out the game with his fifth save of the season.
