I. Purpose
Established in 1990, the purpose of the University of Illinois Chicago Athletics Hall of Fame is to recognize student-athletes, teams, coaches, staff and special inductees who have made demonstrably outstanding and significant contributions to the athletic tradition and heritage of Flames Athletics. These procedures set forth the categories of parties eligible for consideration as inductees, the qualifications required of such individuals or teams for election, and the process by which people shall be nominated and elected.
II. Election Committee
The University of Illinois Chicago Athletics Hall of Fame Election Committee shall be comprised of at least seven (7) members, but not more than eleven (11) members, appointed by the Director of Athletics:
A. Permanent Members. Four (4) members shall be permanent: the Director of Athletics (or designee), the Faculty Athletics Representative, a Deputy Athletics Director, and the head of Strategic Athletic Communications. The Director of Athletics (or designee) shall serve as Chairperson of the Election Committee.
B. At-Large Members. At-large members shall be appointed for a term of two induction classes and selected from a broad base of interests, including former student-athletes, current and former coaches, UIC alumni, Flames Athletic Fund donors, UIC faculty and staff, and other stakeholders.
C. Ex-Officio. Ex-Officio members shall be appointed per induction class and shall be nonvoting committee members.
D. Participation Requirements. Election Committee members are required to participate in the Election Committee’s selection meeting and the Hall of Fame Induction Event during their respective terms.
E. Representation. The Election Committee should be representative with respect to age, gender, ethnicity, sport, era and perspective.
III. Election Process
A. Election Cycle. The Election Committee shall hold a meeting once every two years to review nominees and make elections. To be elected, a nominee must receive at least three-fourths (3/4) of the vote of the committee members present and voting. At least two-thirds (2/3) of committee members must be present to constitute a quorum.
B. Nominations. Nominations shall be accepted from members of the Election Committee and from the general public through a standard nomination form made available on the UIC Athletics website. Nominations submitted after the published deadline will be tabled until the following election cycle. Nominees shall remain eligible for two election cycles and, if not elected in that time, must be re-nominated for further consideration. Nomination forms, biographical information, and statistics on nominees will be compiled and confirmed under the direction of UIC Athletic Communications.
C. Class Composition. A maximum of seven (7) individuals shall be elected in any induction class. The election of a team or unit (e.g. basketball team, tennis doubles team, swimming relay team) shall count as one (1) against the maximum number of annual inductees. Consideration should be given to the representation of gender, ethnicity, sport, era and other characteristics in the composition of each induction class.
IV. Nomination Criteria
A. Student-Athlete Inductees. Any student-athlete who competed for UIC Athletics (Navy Pier, UICC or UIC) shall be eligible for consideration, provided that five (5) years have passed since the completion of athletic eligibility. All nominees must have received their UIC degrees or left in good academic standing, as determined in accordance with applicable University policies. The following criteria should be considered as a guide in electing outstanding student-athletes:
    1. Olympic medal winner or member of Olympic medal winning team
    2. Individual or team national champion
    3. Individual or team league champion
    4. World record holder
    5. National record holder
    6. League record holder
    7. UIC record holder
    8. National team selection
    9. All-America selection
    10. All-League selection
    11. National or state hall of fame member
    12. National player or coach of the year
    13. League player or coach of the year
    14. Letter winner in multiple sports
    15. Academic All-America honors
    16. Academic All-League honors
    17. Distinguished post-UIC career in athletics, business, or public service
B. Special Inductees. Any individual, living or deceased, who has made unique and extraordinary contributions to the UIC Athletics program, shall be eligible for election as a Special Inductee. Special Inductees may include coaches, athletic staff members, distinguished alumni, friends of UIC Athletics and other individuals who are not necessarily eligible as a Student-Athlete Inductee. Eligibility as a Student-Athlete Inductee shall not disqualify an individual for consideration as a Special Inductee. A maximum of three (3) nominees from this category may be elected in any induction class, but there is no expectation to choose a Special Inductee in any induction class.
C. It is acknowledged that this procedure does not cover every individual or circumstance and that the Election Committee must have a degree of flexibility in its consideration of truly outstanding and deserving nominees. This flexibility is important in considering individuals prior to UIC’s transition to NCAA Division I in 1981, for example.
V. Induction
A. Induction Event. Inductees shall be officially notified by the Director of Athletics, invited to and formally inducted at the University of Illinois Chicago Athletic Hall of Fame Induction Event (or successor events as may be developed). Attendance is required for induction, with the obvious exception of posthumous inductees. Inductions will occur once every three years, but can occur less frequently at the discretion of the Director of Athletics.
B. Inductee Recognition. Each inductee shall receive the following upon, or shortly after, their induction: a Hall of Fame medal, on-court recognition at a men’s basketball home game, UIC Athletics website recognition, and recognition in the UIC Athletics Hall of Fame display on UIC’s campus at Credit Union 1 Arena.
VI. Revocation
UIC retains the right to remove a previously inducted member from its Athletics Hall of Fame should that member be convicted of, plead guilty to, or otherwise accept responsibility for, any felony or crime that involves dishonesty, violence or moral turpitude; whose conduct results in a major violation under NCAA or conference rules; or who fails to adhere to commonly accepted standards of decency that bring disrepute to the University. The vote required to remove a previously inducted member shall be three-fourths (3/4) of the Election Committee members present and voting.
VII. Modification of Procedure
Modifications to this procedure may be made by a vote of approval of at least three-fourths (3/4) of the members of the Election Committee and requires a thirty (30) day written notice of such consideration before the meeting.
