Chicago, Ill. - The UIC volleyball team lost its second straight match on Friday night as Midwestern Collegiate Conference leader Loyola downed the Flames 15-6, 15-10, 10-15, 15-9 at the UIC Pavilion.
The defeat marked the first time UIC has suffered back-to-back losses this season as they drop to 12-4 on the year and 2-2 in the MCC. Loyola, who has dominated the series between the two schools winning the last 10 meetings, notched its fifth-straight victory, improving to 9-6 on the season while remaining undefeated (4-0) in league play.
"I thought we played well tonight," UIC Head Coach Don August remarked after the game. "Loyola served tougher, though, and their defense was incredible. We had a lot of effort, but we needed to execute better."
Loyola controlled the first two games as they seemingly blocked or dug every UIC attacken route to going into the break up 2-0. The Flames rallied back, though, in game three as junior Lara Clarkson, who has missed most of the season with a shoulder injury, tallied nine of her team-high 13 kills in the game to lead UIC to a 15-10 triumph.
The Ramblers regained control early in the fourth game, jumping out to an 11-4 advantage and then holding on to close out the match 15-9.
Senior Kelly Price led the Ramblers with 12 kills and a match-high 23 digs while setter Renee Nash added 39 assists, 16 digs, six kills and three blocks in the win. Loyola also benefited from eight service aces in the match, led by Lauren Mikos, who had three.
Lara Clarkson led UIC with 13 kills while senior Ann Hintz led UIC with 19 digs. Senior Erica Anderson posted the Flames only double-double, finishing with 36 assists and 18 digs. Junior Kim Forster set a new career best in the loss with 12 digs.
Don August's crew is back in action on Monday, October 9, as they bring Division I volleyball to the south side when they take on Bradley at Queen of Peace High School in Burbank, Ill., at 2:00 p.m.
