Tampa, Fla. - The UIC softball team remained perfect through the first two days of the Speedline Invitational as the 19th-ranked Flames beat Maryland and No. 18 South Carolina to move to 21-12 overall and 4-0 in tournament play.
For the second day in a row Stefanie Christoferson provided late-inning heroics to help the Flames remain unbeaten through the second day of their spring break trip.
With Maryland leading 3-1 in the bottom of the sixth, Christoferson hit a two-run homer to knot the game at 3-3 and send it into extra innings. The score remained tied until the ninth inning when Jennifer Tiffany hit a shot into left field to drive in Abby Booth for the game-winning run.
Samantha Iuli picked up the win for UIC, moving her season record to 12-5.
The Flames also on their second game of the day in a pitcher's dual, with UIC downing 18th-ranked South Carolina, 1-0. Sophomore Rory Gonzales-Gould scattered five hits over seven innings and walked just one batter to help UIC to the win, its fourth in a row. With the win, Gonzales-Gould improved to 9-7 on the season. Amber Stachura provided the game-winning run, driving in senior Gina Arnold to give the Flames a 1-0 win.
UIC returns to action Saturday at 9:00 a.m., CST, as the Flames conclude their bracket schedule against Purdue. The Speedline then moves to a single elimination format, with that round beginning at 4:00 p.m., Saturday.
