Freshman Sequoia Sanchez earns spot on All-MVC Defensive Team

Chicago, Ill. – For her performance during the 2025 Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) season, UIC softball student-athlete Sequoia Sanchez has earned All-MVC Defensive Honors as announced this morning by the conference before the start of the 2025 MVC Softball Championships.

Sanchez was a standout at first base for the Flames during her first year. The freshman started in 41 of 43 games played while tallying 206 putouts, including a game high of 11 on March 2nd against Dayton. Sanchez added seven assists while recording a .964 fielding percentage.

Interim Head Coach Jamie Buksa said the following about Sanchez: "As a freshman coming into the first base position, Sequoia had big shoes to fill with Larisa Villa graduating, as Villa was a 2x MVC All-Defensive Team honoree at first base. Sequoia's offense is what caught our eye, but she told us 'Defense is what I pride myself on" when she got here, and she has done nothing but live up to that while at UIC.' Buska continued with "Sequoia has a bright future ahead in the next three years, and I can't wait to see what her future holds. I am proud of the way she has stepped into her role, and she has exceeded my expectations."

This afternoon, at 1:00 PM CT, the no. 12 Flames will be in action as they will take the diamond in Des Moines, Iowa, to take on the no. 5 Missouri State University Bears in game two of the MVC Softball Championships. The MVC Softball Championship page will hold all game information, including updates, opponents, live stream links, live stat links, and box scores. The live stream will also be available on ESPN+, while live stats will be available on UICFlames.com
