Nashville, Tenn. - The UIC baseball team scored one run in each of the first four innings and added three insurance runs in the top of the ninth en route to its fifth win of the season Friday afternoon, a 7-1 victory over Belmont.
Pitcher Nick Worm turned in a stellar performance on the mound for the Flames as he went the distance, giving up just four hits and one earned run while striking out five in his second win of the year.
The Flames ran all day long on Belmont catcher Jerrod Smith, swiping seven bases in nine attempts. Stolen bases set up UIC's first four runs of the game while John Rosner led the Flames' thieves with three stolen bases.
UIC's first run of the game came after Curtis Granderson led off the outing with a walk, stole second, and three batters later scored on a single to centerfield by Bob Rosinski.
The Flames then added another run in the top of the second as lead-off hitter Rosner drew a free pass, stole second, moved to third on a groundout by J.P. Moran and scored on a Mike Lorenzo ground ball.
In the third, Sean McNichols started the inning with a single and then stole second base before crossing home plate on an error at second base. Rosner again scored for the Flames in the fourth as he tallied a single, swiped second base and scored on a Lorenzo double to right center.
In the top of the ninth, UIC rallied once again for three more runs highlighted by singles from Bogdan Gryglak and Granderson and a double by Eric Duke.
UIC and Belmont will play game two of their three-game series tomorrow afternoon at 1:00 p.m. at Greer Stadium.
