Women's Tennis Dominates Bowling Green Invitational

Bowling Green, Ohio - The five-time league champion UIC women's tennis team proved to be in midseason form over the weekend as they kicked off their 2001-02 campaign at the Bowling Green Invitational.

All in all, the Flames captured four of the five singles flight titles while finishing the event with an overall record of 19-5 in individual singles action. UIC, under the guidance of first-year head coach Shannon Tully, was also successful in doubles play, posting a 6-6 mark at the BGSU Invite.

Sophomore Ayca Gumuscu picked up where she left off last season en route to winning the No. 1 singles flight title. Gumuscu was a perfect 3-0 on the weekend, tallying victories over Melissa Dunham-Freer of Wright State and Devon Bissinger of Bowling Green before claiming the championship with a three-set triumph over Carolina Salinas of Indiana State.

In the No. 2 singles flight, senior newcomer Britta Dohmann had an impressive collegiate debut, going 3-0 including a third set tie-breaker win over Kristina Bothova of Northern Illinois, 7-6(4), 4-6, (10-8).

Seniors Alyson Stalzer and Kim Harris then wrapped things up for the Flames, bringing home the No. 4 and No. 5 flight titles.

Stalzer tallied straight set wins over Korkoi Quaye of Northern Illinois, Logan Baker of Indiana State and Marie Craig of Wright State en route to the No. 4 flight championship while Harris also went 3-0 with straight set wins over Ashley Topper (Wright State), Jessica Johnson (Bowling Green) and Maggie Jacobs (Wright State).

In other singles action, junior Nicole Derouin (2-1) placed third in the No. 1 singles flight. Zvjezdana (2-1/No. 3 singles) and Zorica (2-1/No. 4 singles) Malesevic both placed fifth for the weekend.

Derouin and Gumuscu led the way in doubles action for UIC, placing third in the No. 1 flight with a 2-1 record.
