Houston, Texas - The UIC softball team rebounded from yesterday's 1-0 loss to Northwestern State in the opening game of the University of Houston Softball Invitational Tournament on Friday to take two this afternoon, downing Stephen F. Austin, 3-2, and host Houston, 9-3.
With the wins, UIC is now 2-1 in the tournament and 9-6 on the season. Mike McGovern's crew will be back in action tomorrow morning as they take on Northwestern State in the tournament semifinals at 10:00 a.m. With a win, the Flames would advance to meet East Tennessee State in the championship game at 12:00 p.m.

UIC freshman hurler Courtney Guthrie picked up her first collegiate win on Saturday as the Flames topped Stephen F. Austin, 3-2, to open second-day action at the University of Houston Invitational Tournament.
Guthrie (1-0) went the distance for UIC, scattering four hits and striking out two Ladyjack batters.
The Flames got on the board first in the top of the first as Amanda Rivera's sacrifice fly staked UIC to a 1-0 lead. Stephen F. Austin answered, though, with a pair of runs in the second frame to take the lead back, 2-1. The Flames would fight back, getting another sacrifice fly from Rivera in the third, before Emily Stoddard score on a passed ball in the fifth inning to give UIC the 3-2 lead they would never relinquish.
The Flames, who snapped a two-game losing streak with the win, are now 3-0 versus Stephen F. Austin this season.

Trailing 1-0 to tournament host Houston, UIC exploded for five runs in the top of the second inning to propel them to a 9-3 victory over the Cougars.
Senior Stefanie Christoferson and junior Edel Leyden led UIC's offensive attack versus Houston. Christoferson, who went 2-for-2 at the plate with four RBI, notched her second home run of the season - a two-run blast - while Leyden was 2-for-3 on the day with a double and three RBI.
Abby Booth and Jennifer Tiffany also added RBI knocks for the Flames while junior Amber Stachura, who got the start in right field, was 2-for-2 on the day.
Freshman Alycia Creese (4-3) went the distance for UIC, pitching around three UIC errors to earn her fourth win of the season.
