Wisconsin 3, UIC 0
Tampa, Fla. - Wisconsin made the most of an ill fated drop ball from UIC starter Maral Binnebose on Tuesday morning as they downed the Flames, 3-0, at the University of South Florida.
Binnebose (2-3) seemed to be dialed in early on, retiring with ease the first six batters she faced. In the third inning, though, the Badgers finally got to her as Anna Jones started the frame with a single to left field. Two batters later, Binnebose hung a drop ball and Sheena Padovan made her pay, launching a two-run homer over the right field wall to stake Wisconsin to a 2-0 lead.
The Badgers would plate an insurance run in the fifth as Padovan struck again with an RBI single.
Those three runs would be more than enough for Wisconsin hurler Andrea Kirchberg (11-4). She shut down the Flames, allowing just two hits in seven innings of work for her 11th win of the season.
Binnebose picked up the loss to fall to 2-3 on the year
UIC, which has now been shutout 10 times this spring, dropped to 14-15 with the loss.
UIC 6, Canisius 1
Tampa, Fla. - UIC rebounded from its shutout loss to Wisconsin earlier in the day, to take out Canisius, 6-1, on Tuesday at the University of South Florida.
Stefanie Christoferson and Jacquelyne Vaca both went 2-for-3 at the plate to pace the Flames' offense while freshman Alison Aguilar took care of things on the mound in the victory.
UIC scratched the scoreboard early as Vaca roped an RBI double off the left field wall in the bottom of the first inning to put the Flames up, 1-0.
That lead would last until the third when the Golden Griffins capitalized on an Emily Stoddard error to even the score at 1-1.
The Flames took the lead right back in the bottom of the inning as Christoferson, who was hitless in her last 18 at bats, broke though with a two-run double for a 3-1 UIC advantage.
An inning later, rookie Amanda Ritchie extended the Flames' lead to 4-1 with an RBI single to center. That advantage would grow to 6-1 in the fifth as Christoferson and Molly Freeman both laced run-scoring knocks.
UIC starter Aguilar would take care of the rest, scattering seven hits and striking out three in seven innings pitched en route to her fourth win of the season.
The Flames, who evened their record at 15-15 on the year, will be back in action on Thursday, March 15, when they begin pool play at the USF Clearwater Parks and Recreation Tournament.
