Game 6
UIC 4, Loyola 0
Chicago, Ill. - Behind a strong pitching performance from senior Rory Gonzales-Gould, the UIC softball team secured a second-place finish at the 'Battle in the Windy City' Fall Tournament with a 4-0 win over Loyola on Saturday night at Flames Field.
With the victory the Flames finished with a 2-1 record in the round-robin tournament while Loyola placed third with a 1-2 mark. DePaul claimed the tournament title after posting a perfect 3-0 mark. The Blue Demons did not allow a run in their three contests, outscoring their opponents 27-0. Northwestern finished fourth after going 0-3.
Gonzales-Gould paced UIC to victory in the tourney nightcap, controlling the Ramblers in the circle. The veteran right-hander tossed seven shutout innings while allowing just one hit. Carole Gorecki picked up the loss for Loyola.
UIC got on the board first, tallying a run in the first inning on an RBI single by senior Amber Stachura. The Flames, who had the bases loaded with no outs in the frame, were unable to plate any more, though, as Rambler starter Carole Gorecki retired Emily Hallmann and Alycia Creese to get out of the early jam.
After leaving the bases loaded, once again, in the third inning, UIC broke through in the fourth plating a pair of runs on an error by Rambler shortstop Keilah Williams and a sacrifice fly off the bat of Sara Hernandez. Those two runs would also spell the end of the day for Gorecki, who was tagged with the loss.
The Flames would plate another run in the fifth inning for a 4-0 lead, capitalizing on a throwing error by Loyola third baseman Sue Stanley that rolled down the right field line allowing Leigh Farina to score from first.
Senior Amy Gonzales (2-for-3) sparked both Flames' rallies in the third and fifth with key singles.
