Tampa, Fla. - The UIC softball team came up shot in its bid for a fourth consecutive tournament title on Saturday evening as they were bounced out in the quarterfinals of the 2002 Speedline Invitational.
The Flames (16-8), who opened elimination play with a five-inning triumph over Tennessee-Chattanooga, 8-0, fell in the round-of-eight to Houston, 7-5.
The loss to the Cougars came in the third game of the day for UIC and followed a no-hitter tossed by sophomore Alison Aguilar in the Flames triumph over the Mocs of Tennessee-Chattanooga.
In the quarterfinal game, sophomore Alycia Creese, who was vying for her ninth win of the season, came up just short, falling to 8-3 on the year.
Senior Edel Leyden continued her torrid run at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a home run and a two-run double. Senior Amber Stachura also launched a two-run homer in the game.
Versus the Mocs, Stachura, Jacquelyne Vaca, Leyden and Amanda Rivera each posted two RBI in the win.
The Flames will now return to Chicago for three days before heading back to Florida to compete in the Blue and Gold Classic hosted by Florida International.
