Miami, Fla. -The UIC softball team wrapped up its spring trip on Tuesday afternoon with a doubleheader split with Massachusetts at the Florida International Softball Diamond.
The Minutewomen controlled the Flames offense in a 6-2 triumph in the first game, but UIC found its swing in the second contest, rolling to an 8-2 win.
In the opener, UMass plated three runs in the third and the sixth inning as Flames starter Amanda Ritchie was tagged with her third loss in the circle on the year.
UIC received its offensive production on an RBI double by sophomore Alycia Creese in the second inning and a run-scoring double by senior Amber Stachura in the sixth.
Game two was a different story for the Flames as they jumped out on the Minutewomen with four first-inning runs. Senior Edel Leyden, who was named Horizon League Player of the Week today, put UIC on the board first with a two-run homer, which gives her a team-high 11 on the year. Creese would match Leyden later in the frame with a two-run shot of her own. It was Creese's first collegiate home run.
UIC would add to its lead in the sixth inning with a two-out rally, plating four runs on back-to-back two-run doubles by Emily Hallmann and Leyden (2-for-4, 4 RBI).
Sophomore Alison Aguilar, who earned Horizon League Pitcher of the Week honors on Tuesday, picked up the win for the Flames, going the distance while giving up just one earned run.
UIC will now take a two week break from the road before heading back out on April 4 as they begin regional play versus Notre Dame in South Bend.
