Chicago, Ill. - Junior Cameron Astiazaran was recognized for her elite level of achievement both on the field and in the classroom on Thursday afternoon, earning a spot on the 2004 CoSIDA Academic All-America Softball Third Team.
Astiazaran is the first UIC softball player to garner Academic All-America status.
The Rolling Hills Estates, Calif., native enjoyed a career year on the field this season, batting a team-high .381 with 25 doubles, nine home runs and 44 RBI. She also led the Horizon League in two-baggers while also ranking first in hits (82) and runs scored (53).
Astiazaran was an All-Horizon League First Team honoree in helping guide her team to a league title while also garnering All-Tournament accolades at the NCAA Region VI Championships in Ann Arbor, Mich.
Off the field, Astiazaran boasts a 3.65 GPA in Criminal Justice and is a member of the Horizon League Academic Honor Roll.
Astiazaran is one of six sarters that will be returning for the Flames next year, coming off a season in which UIC captured the Horizon League regular-season and tournament title while making its eighth all-time NCAA Regional appearance.
