Mesa, Ariz.- The UIC baseball team could not overcome Creighton's four-run third inning as the Flames fell to the Bluejays by a 5-0 count at HoHoKam Park on Sunday afternoon.
UIC (2-2) mustered only four hits against tough Creighton pitching on the final day of play for the Flames at the spring training home of the Chicago Cubs.
Freshman DH Brett Schaefer led the Flames with a 2-for-4 day at the plate, while OF Bart Babineaux (1-for-3, walk) and 2B Mark Hallberg (1-for-4) notched base knocks for UIC.
Don Phillis, making his first collegiate start, suffered the loss. The freshman lefty gave up five runs on nine hits in five innings with a strikeout.
Zach Daeges delivered a two-run shot to start the scoring in the four-run third for Creighton (2-3). The Bluejays added one more run in the fourth on a solo homer from Chris Gradoville to cap the game scoring.
UIC returns to action next weekend, facing No. 15 Long Beach State in Long Beach, Calif., for a three-game set beginning on Friday at 6:30 p.m. Pacific/8:30 p.m. Central.
