Clearwater, Fl. - The UIC women's softball team topped Temple, 10-2, to kick off the USF Adidas Invitational on Thursday, March 9th. In game two of the doubleheader, the Flames fell to Hofstra University, 2-0. UIC is set to play #2 Tennessee at 12 pm, followed by a contest versus NC State at 5 pm on day two of the tournament. With the split today, the Flames move to 3-13 on the season.
Game One: In the bottom of the first inning, freshman Sarah Clynes hit a triple. Nicole Robinson then doubled to centerfield, giving the Flames a 1-0 advantage. With one on base, freshman Melissa Marinacci ripped a double down the right field line to send Robinson home.
Sophomore Lauren Brennan extended the Flames lead to 4-0 on an RBI single to left center.
The Owls cut the deficit to two runs after scoring in the top of the fourth and fifth.
In the bottom of the fifth, the Flames went up 5-2 on an RBI double from Brennan, followed by a two-run home run by senior Joyce Cathey. UIC picked up a 10-2 win after posting three more runs in the sixth to end the game.
With the win, freshman Kelly Cross moves to 2-4 on the season.
Game Two: Hofstra struck first with an RBI single from senior third baseman Tara Ulrich to give the Pride a 1-0 lead after the top of the third.
With the bases loaded in the top of the fourth, Hofstra's Ulrich popped up to UIC right fielder Sarah Clynes to get the Flames out of the inning.
In the top of the fourth, the Pride grabbed a 2-0 lead.
UIC threatened in several innings, leaving 12 on base versus Hofstra, but the Pride would move to 6-5 overall with the 2-0 victory over UIC.
Brittany McIntrye moved to 0-4 on the season and Hofstra's Melissa Hodge picked up the win with Amy Belonick earning the save for the Pride.
