Baseball Beats Youngstown State To Sweep Saturday Doubleheader

April 1, 2006

Box Score

Chicago, Ill.- Rookie lefthander Don Phillis pitched six sterling innings of scoreless baseball to guide the UIC baseball team to a 4-1 victory over Youngstown State and complete a doubleheader sweep on Saturday at Les Miller Field.

UIC evens its overall record to 11-11 with its fourth consecutive victory and eighth win in the last ten contests. The Flames improve to 4-1 in the Horizon League.

Phillis gave up just four hits in his six frames and held the Penguins (8-15, 2-3 Horizon League) without a run to earn his second win of the year and move to 2-4 overall.

Senior reliever Jason Foster came out of the bullpen for the second time on Saturday, pitching the last three innings of the doubleheader finale to earn his second save.

Senior outfielder Bart Babineaux put UIC on the board first in the bottom of the fourth inning, launching Youngstown State hurler Eric Shaffer's offering over the left field fence for solo shot and a 1-0 UIC lead.

The home run was Babineaux's team-leading fourth of the season and third round-tripper in the last four games.

UIC scored another run in the next inning as Nick Rainwater's sacrifice fly scored Chad Schroeder and turned the Flames' lead to 2-0.

The Flames tacked on two more runs in the seventh, as Schroeder scored on a throwing error by YSU second baseman Josh Page and Bryan Nolte reached home plate on Rainwater's sacrifice bunt.

Youngstown State scored an unearned run in the eighth, but Foster retired the final five Penguin batters in order after the run scored to close out the win.

The Penguins committed a total of eight errors during Saturday's twinbill after accumulating three more miscues in the late game.

UIC has now taken seven consecutive games against Youngstown State dating back to last season.

Schroeder led the way with a 2-for-3 day at the dish in the second game, scoring two runs.

UIC concludes its three-game home series against Youngstown State on Sunday at noon at Les Miller Field.
