East Cleveland, Ohio- Seven runs in the final two innings proved to be the difference in the UIC baseball team's 9-2 win over host Cleveland State in the second game of a doubleheader on Saturday at Forest Hill Park.
Junior shortstop Chad Schroeder went 3-for-4, bashing his first home run of the season, while senior rightfielder Bart Babineaux homered for the second time on Saturday in a three RBI effort.
UIC (15-11, 7-1 Horizon League) extended their winning streak to eight games with a sweep of Saturday's twinbill. The Flames have now won 12 of their last 14 contests.
Freshman southpaw Don Phillis pitched 6.1 innings to earn the win and even his record at 4-4.
Phillis was perfect through four innings before Ryan Baechel homered to left centerfield to put Cleveland State up 1-0.
It didn't take UIC long to respond. Mark Hallberg singled with two out in the fifth to drive in Schroeder and tie the game at 1-1.
In the top of the seventh, the Flames broke the tie when Nick Rainwater singled to drive in Ben Trotter and put UIC up 2-1.
The scoring continued in a big way for the Flames in the top of the eighth. Schroeder homered to center with one out to extend the UIC lead to two runs. Justin Johnson and Mark Hallberg hit consecutive doubles that scored the former, and Babineaux drove in the latter and himself with a two-run shot to left.
UIC added three more in the ninth on a two-run shot by Larry Gempp Jr. and a Babineaux base knock that drove home Johnson.
Stephen Procnor took the loss for Cleveland State (1-21, 0-8 Horizon League).
Babineaux continues to be on a power surge of late, with seven home runs in the last eight games.
The Flames scored a total of 22 runs while pounding out 31 hits in the doubleheader.
UIC and Cleveland State wrap up their three-game set on Sunday at 11:00 a.m. Central at Forest Hill Park.
