Bloomington, Ind. - UIC softball split on day one of the Indiana Classic in Bloomington on Friday. The Flames (8-16) captured an 11-1 victory over Buffalo in five innings, but fell short in a late comeback against host Indiana in game two (2-1).
Brooke Frydendall led UIC in the first day of competition with a .600 batting average (3-for-5). The freshman totaled two runs scored and two RBI in two contests. Junior Nicole Robinson was 3-for-5 at the plate with two runs and one RBI.
UIC 11, Buffalo 1 (5 innings)
Sophomore Sarah Clynes moves to 7-7 in the circle after fanning three players in five innings pitched. Buffalo pitcher Margo Schramm falls to 0-7 on the season.
Junior Brittany Dixon was 2-for-4 with one RBI. Robinson was 1-for-2 with two runs scored and one RBI. Fyrdendall was 2-for-2 at the plate with two runs and one RBI.
Freshman Stephanie Chavez was 2-for-3 with one run and one RBI. Moran and sophomore Melissa Marinacci each tabbed two RBI against the Bulls. Clynes was 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Designated player Liz Jacoby was 1-for-2 with two runs and one RBI.
Buffalo's Dana Carter and Katie Ivancich each went 1-for-2 at the plate. Erin Zilka paced the Bulls with two hits and one RBI. Marcy Hansen was 1-for-3 with one run scored against UIC.
The Flames sparked their offensive attack early against Buffalo with three runs on RBI from Dixon, Jacoby and Robinson in the first inning. After UIC notched three runs in five at bats, the Bulls replaced Schramm in the circle with Carter.
With the bases loaded, Moran drew a walk to tack on another run (4-0). Marinacci then drove in UIC's fifth run on a ground ball to second base. Buffalo cut the deficit to four on an RBI double to left field by Zilka.
UIC then recorded six runs in the top of the second inning for an 11-1 lead. Following a Clynes base hit to left field, Carter walked three straight, sending the pitcher home. Chavez then ripped a single up the middle, followed by RBI from Moran, Marinacci and Ackerman.
UIC held Buffalo for the next three innings to clinch the 11-1 victory after five innings.
Indiana 2, UIC 1
Hoosier Monica Wright (10-7) picks up the win in the circle after fanning two batters in six innings. Freshman Chelsea Fuemmeler moves to 1-9 with four strikeouts versus Indiana.
Frydendall, Moran and junior Studzinski were each 1-for-3 at the plate. Frydendall notched UIC's lone RBI of the game. Clynes was 1-for-3 with one run scored, while Robinson led the team with a .666 batting average (2-for-3).
Catcher Tori Yamaguchi was 1-for-3 with one run and a two-run home run for the Hoosiers. Rachel Terry was 1-for-3 with one run. Kim Richards and Stephanie Pellerito were 1-for-2 apiece against the Flames.
The Hoosiers took an early 2-0 lead on a Yamaguchi two-run homer in the bottom of the first.
Scoreless for two innings, the Flames cut IU's lead to one run in the top of the fourth. Clynes started it off with a single to right field. Jacoby moved Clynes over on a force out, followed by a single by Robinson. Frydendall then ripped a hit up the middle, sending Clynes home (2-1).
With runners on second and third in the top of the seventh inning, the Flames were unable to capitalize as the Hoosiers captured the 2-1 win.
The Flames face Eastern Michigan at 9:00 a.m. CST on March 24 before heading into tournament play Saturday afternoon which continues through Sunday.
