Bloomington, Ind. - Despite topping Buffalo, 13-0, in five innings to advance in tournament play of the IU Classic on Sunday afternoon, the UIC softball team fell short in the championship game against Eastern Michigan (8-5).
Sophomore Sarah Clynes recorded a 1-1 mark with one shutout and three strikeouts in nine innings pitched.
Junior Brittany Dixon posted a .667 batting average (4-for-6) with two runs, two doubles and five RBI. Freshman Brooke Frydendall was 4-for-7 with three runs and two RBI. Freshman Stephanie Chavez picked up her second collegiate home run versus Buffalo with a three run homer.
UIC 13, Buffalo 0 (5 innings)
Clynes notched her third shutout on the season to move her overall record to 9-7. The sophomore totaled three strikeouts in five innings pitched.
Frydendall was 3-for-3 with two runs and two RBI. Chavez was 1-for-3 with one run, three RBI and one home run. Dixon posted a .666 batting average (2-for-3) with one double, one run and a team-high four RBI.
Buffalo's Marcy Hanser was 1-for-3, while Sharon Barr and Dana Carter each picked up a hit against the Flames. Barr moves to 1-9 on the season in the circle.
The Flames took an early lead against the Bulls with an RBI single to left field from Frydendall with the bases loaded. Nicole Robinson then sent Ashlee Ackerman home on a hard hit to the shortstop, followed by an RBI from Mallory Studzinski. Dixon then ripped a three-run RBI double to left field to give the Flames a 6-0 lead.
UIC tacked on two more runs in the second inning on a Frydendall RBI single and two Buffalo errors. Clynes gave the Flames an eight-run advantage in the third on an RBI double to left field.
The Flames continued to dominate offensively, adding four runs in the fourth on a three-run homer from Chavez and an RBI single to right field by Dixon.
UIC held Buffalo in the top of the fifth to clinch the 13-0 win after five innings. The Flames totaled 13 runs on 13 hits and committed zero errors to advance to the championship game versus Eastern Michigan.
Eastern Michigan 8, UIC 5
Despite a fourth-inning comeback against Eastern Michigan on Sunday afternoon, the Flames fell, 8-5.
Michelle Lloyd (2-5) picked up the win in the circle, while Clynes moves to 9-8 on the season.
Dixon was 2-for-3 with one run, one double and one RBI. Clynes was 1-for-3 with two RBI. Becky Moran totaled one hit and one RBI against the Eagles.
Eastern Michigan's Heather Han was 1-for-2 with a three-run home run. Jessica Scherer was 3-for-4 with one run and two RBI. Heather Giroux totaled two hits and two RBI in the win.
Eastern Michigan grabbed a 2-0 lead in the top of the third inning on an RBI single to center field by Scherer.
Clynes replaced Lauren Brennan in the circle for the Flames.
The Flames responded in the fourth and took a 4-2 advantage on five hits. With runners on second and third, Moran drilled a single to right field, sending Robinson home. Dixon ripped a two-run RBI double to right center, followed by a two-run RBI double from Clynes.
Eastern Michigan regained the lead on a three-run homer to left field by Han in the top of the fifth. UIC knotted it at 5-5 on an eagle error in the bottom half of the inning.
Jessica Grant singled to third base with the bases loaded in the top of the seventh (6-5). Giroux then singled to left center, sending two across home plate for an 8-5 lead.
Eastern Michigan held UIC in the bottom of the seventh for the title game victory.
UIC hosts its home opener on Thursday, March 29 in a doubleheader versus Bradley starting at 4:30 p.m.
