Chicago, Ill.- Derrick Miramontes took a shutout into the eighth and Steve McGuiggan homered in the UIC baseball team's 5-3 win over Northwestern in the nightcap of Friday's twinbill at Les Miller Field.
The Flames (5-7) took two out of three games against the Wildcats (4-5).
Miramontes earned his first victory in a UIC uniform with seven solid innings, keeping the Wildcats off the board until he departed in the eighth.
UIC never trailed, scoring the game's first run in the second on Jake Carr's RBI sacrifice fly.
McGuiggan hit a solo shot over the left field wall with one away in the third to extend the Flames' lead to 2-0.
The Flames tacked on two more runs in the fourth after back-to-back RBI hits. Chris Rutta bunted for a base hit to drive in Carr from third, and McGuiggan plated his second run of the day on a double to right field that sent home Rutta.
A Brett Schaefer single to drive in Tony Altavilla from third in the fifth gave the Flames their fourth consecutive run-scoring inning and a 5-0 lead.
Miramontes ran into some trouble in the eighth, loading the bases with no outs. Don Phillis came on in relief, minimizing the damage by allowing just two Northwestern runs to cross the plate in the frame.
Phillis finished the game for his first collegiate save.
UIC resumes its 10-game homestand on Tuesday, March 18 against Illinois State at Les Miller Field beginning at 4:05 p.m.
