Chicago, Ill.- Mike Kool tossed a complete game gem, and a four-run fifth inning provided plenty of offensive cushion in the UIC baseball team's 6-2 victory over Cleveland State in the first of two games at Les Miller Field on Sunday.
Brett Schaefer tripled and drove in two runs for the Flames (26-19, 13-6 Horizon League).
It appeared as though Kool would come away unscathed after Brad Buell's wind-aided double led off the game, but a dropped fly ball in left field gave Cleveland State (20-24, 9-10) the game's first run.
The Vikings were unable able to muster much else, though, as Kool scattered seven hits and allowed just one earned tally in going the distance and winning for the fourth time this season.
UIC took the lead with a pair of runs in the fourth. Jake Carr doubled with one out, and Schaefer followed with an RBI triple to the gap in right center. A wild pitch unfurled by Viking starter Anthony Sambula shortly after allowed Schaefer to score the go-ahead run.
The Flames broke the game open with a four-spot in the fifth. Steve McGuiggan hit an RBI triple in the vicinity of Schaefer's three-bagger to fuel the decisive inning.
