Chicago, Ill.- Another solid start from Mike Kool and plenty of offensive production helped the UIC baseball team cinch an 11-4 victory over visiting Valparaiso at Les Miller Field on Friday night.
The Flames (29-19, 15-6 Horizon League) now need two wins against Valparaiso (18-31, 8-11) on Saturday to clinch their seventh straight Horizon League regular season title and the top seed in next week's Horizon League Baseball Championship presented by U.S. Army.
Kool allowed just two unearned runs in eight innings to claim his fifth win of the year. He has now gone into the eighth in five consecutive starts.
The UIC offense busted out 16 hits, led by a 3-for-4 day from Brett Schaefer and 3-for-5 outings from Kevin Coddington and Jake Carr.
Carr started the scoring with a solo home run in the first to ignite a three-run surge with two outs in the opening inning.
Already ahead 7-2 after seven and a half innings, the Flames put the game away with a four-run eighth.
UIC closes out the regular season with a doubleheader against Valparaiso at Les Miller Field this Saturday beginning at 1:05 p.m. After the second game the UIC baseball program will honor its lone senior of 2008, right-handed pitcher Grant Kohlstaedt.
