Game Two Boxscore: UIC 7, Heartland 0
Chicago, Ill. - The UIC softball team left Flames Field with a doubleheader sweep on Saturday, defeating Heartland Community College 2-1 and 7-0 this afternoon.
In game one, both squads traded off runs in the fourth inning when Heartland's Amanda Sartoris crossed the plate after a series of Flames miscues in the infield.
UIC answered back in the bottom of the inning, when freshman Melinda Macias RBI single straight up the middle drove in Brooke Frydendall.
The game remained tied through regulation play, and the two teams utilized the international tiebreaker rule (placing the last runner out in the previous inning on second to start the new inning) at the top of the eighth.
After Heartland was unable to create any offense, the Flames came up in the eight with Frydendall waiting to move out on second.
Shannon Kehr' s groundout moved Frydendall to third, and Macias drove in her second RBI of the day with a right field single that brought Frydendall home for a 2-1 Flames victory.
Sarah Clynes picked up the win in the circle, lasting all eight innings and striking out seven in her first one-hitter of the fall.
Game two was all UIC, as the Flames came out and picked up two runs in the first. Melinda Macias drove in her third RBI of the day right before Melissa Marinacci's flyout to right field drove home Carly DeMarco.
The Flames kept the Hawks at bay well into the day's second match-up, as Heartland was only able to advance beyond first base three times after the start of the fourth inning.
Whitney Orellana came into the circle for relief in the fifth, keeping a clean slate for UIC, while giving up four hits and striking out three.
The game was broken open in the bottom of the inning, with a deep two-run homer by Brooke Frydendall. Two more runs would score in the seventh for the final 7-0 score.
UIC's final fall series will be at Evanston, Ill. as the Flames participate in the Northwestern Round Robin next weekend, October 4th. The squad will face the host Wildcats and 10am, followed by Illinois State at noon.
