Baseball Downed In Doubleheader Opener By Canisius

Feb. 20, 2010

Box Score

CARY, N.C.- Four Canisius home runs doomed the UIC baseball team during a 20-4 loss in the first game of a doubleheader on Saturday at the USA Baseball National Training Complex.

Matt Serna drove in three runs for the Flames (0-2).

UIC took a 3-1 lead in the first inning on Chris Rutta's RBI double and a two-out, two-run single up middle hit by Serna.

But the Flames' lead did not last long. Canisius (2-0) scored five times in the top of the second, thanks to a three-run homer over the wall in left center hit by Perry Silverman and a two-run round-tripper to right hit by Steve McQuaill.

The Griffins tacked on four more runs in the fifth, with most of the damage coming on Paul Panik's three-run homer to left.

An inning later Panik pulled a two-run homer over the left field wall.

Starter Eric Wyman struggled with his command, issuing seven walks in just over four innings. The Flames' pitching staff as a whole had a tough time finding the strike zone, as four hurlers allowed a total of 13 free passes during the game.

UIC's offense was unable to respond after the first, as the Flames scored just once in the final eight innings.

Redshirt freshman Harry Kammholz doubled to right center for his first collegiate hit in the eighth, eventually scoring on Serna's second RBI hit of the game.

Eight of Canisius' runs came in the final two frames.
