SAN DIEGO, Calif. - A three-run sixth inning would give Kansas the go-ahead runs it needed to defeat the UIC softball team, 7-5 on Saturday afternoon at the San Diego Classic II Tournament.

After a 5-0 shutout loss to Texas A&M, the Flames (6-17) would get on the board in the opening frame. Brooke Frydendall, who had been hitless in the previous two contests of the weekend, drove in Melinda Macias with a two-out infield single for a 1-0 UIC lead.

Kansas would respond in the bottom of the inning, putting up three runs off three hits and an error in the infield.

The Flames would score three more of their own in the third, when Macias would get her lone hit of the nightcap to get things started for UIC. Stephanie Chavez would single out to centerfield, and a double from Shannon Kehr would bring home the pair to tie things up at three. Frydendall would strike again one batter later with a single up the left side, bringing home Kehr to give the Flames a 4-3 lead.

A pair of singles and a hit batter would give Kansas a game-tying run in the third, leveling the contest at 4-4.

After a silent fourth inning by both sides, Kehr would pick up her third RBI on the day, driving in pinch runner Kara Komp for a 5-4 lead.

But with two outs in the bottom of the sixth, the Jayhawks pulled ahead off of pitcher/centerfielder Alex Jones triple to right centerfield, and a subsequent RBI single from Rosie Hull gave Kansas a two run lead heading into the top of the seventh.

With two outs, the Flames looked to have a chance as Chavez reached first on a fielder's choice and moved all the way to third from Kehr's second double of the outing. But a looking strike during Frydendall's at bat would conclude the evening for UIC with the 7-5 loss.

After lining out in the first inning, Kehr went 3-for-4 with a season-high three RBI on the day.

The Flames close out the San Diego tournament with a match up against Oregon State at 11 a.m. CST on Sunday.
